Odds and Ends on Saturday Morning

Students can apply for $1000 grant  for ideas that teach folks to be a great Conscious Consumer here.  Neat idea.

People who live on a dollar a day. The very poor, economics up close and personal from Slate. By some estimates 20% of the world lives on this miniscule amount.

From the If Life Gives You Lemons Department: a collection of Bushisms. Here's a sampler:

"And one thing we want during this war on terror is for people to feel like their life's moving on, that they're able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table."-Appearing on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, Jan. 16, 2007

CalmEagle: Yeh, life's moving on alright. On into the next huge recession, post-oil wild west and global climate change Hurricane-Katrina-of -theMonth Club.

"You know, when I campaigned here in 2000, I said, I want to be a war President. No President wants to be a war President, but I am one."-Des Moines, Iowa, Oct. 26, 2006

CalmEagle: Huh??

"I've reminded the prime minister-the American people, Mr. Prime Minister, over the past months that it was not always a given that the United States and America would have a close relationship."-Washington, D.C., June 29, 2006

CalmEagle: Mr. President, you can be credited with making sure that your "United States" and the real America are barely on speaking terms. With leaders like you, who needs Frenchmen?

I have a brand new pod, Life After Petroleum. In honor of the crowning glory of petroleum based civilzation being the ability to travel to & flourish in places that God, evolution and common sense obviously didn't design for humanity to flourish in, (like Las Vegas) I submit Bellagio.
Enjoy!!

Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit. --Napolean Hill

I found this in my inbox today, a kid who is sick and who is making a difference to many people. QUOTE:  his goal: adding 2,007 new donors to the National Marrow Donor Program Registry and raising $100,000 to pay for their cheek swabs, all by the end of the year.

Hooray for Pat!!  USING HIS NOGGIN: Pat Pedraja came up with the idea of renting out his forehead for advertising as part of his One Child's Dream / Driving for Donors campaign.God bless him.

QUOTE: Rudy Giuliani made clear in Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate that he is not ready to let the facts get in the way of his approach to foreign policy.

Doggone it, I really didn't want to like any Republicans this time around, 'cept maybe Chuck Hagel, Nebraska's free thinker.  I wanted to be Barack Obama's biggest fan.

Dadblame it, I really like Ron Paul.  Really. No matter how much I try to shake the feeling.

About Congressman Ron Paul

Physician, author and statesman, Dr. Ron Paul (Republican of Texas, although he is a Libertarian as well) is the nation's leading defender of free markets, the Constiturion, limited government and strong families.

Elected to Congress in the seventies and eighties, and re-elected in 1996, he serves on the Financial Services and International Relations committees. Ron Paul works in Congress to end wasteful government spending, reduce taxes and to defend the Constitution. He is the recipient of the best rating in history from the National Taxpayers Union and has also been praised for refusing to take part in the lavish congressional pension scheme.

Dr. Paul is the author of several books, including Challenge to Liberty; The Case for Gold; and Freedom Under Siege. He has been a distinguished counselor to the Ludwig von Mises Institute and is widely quoted by scholars and writers in the fields of monetary policy, banking and economics. He has received many awards and honors during his career in Congress from organizations such as the National Taxpayers Union, Citizens Against Government Waste, the Council for a Competitive Economy, Young Conservatives of Texas and countless others.

Ron Paul is the founder of two educational organizations, FREE and the National Endowment for Liberty. He is also chairman of The Liberty Caucus of fellow congressmen on Capitol Hill.

Ron Paul and his wife of 45 years, Carol, make their home in Surfside, Texas. They are the parents of five children and the grandparents of 16. A former Air Force flight surgeon, Dr. Paul is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Duke University Medical School. In his career as an obstetrician, Dr. Paul has delivered more than 4,000 babies.

Brief Overview of Congressman Paul's Record

Dr Paul bases EVERY bit of his legislation on the strict tenets of Constitutional law.
He will not vote in favor of unConstitutional legislation. Lobbyists will not even bother to go to his office if their "pitch" is unConstitutional in nature.

  • He has never voted to raise taxes.

  • He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.

  • He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.

  • He has never voted to raise congressional pay.

  • He returns a substantial portion of his annual Congressional office budget to the U.S. Treasury every year.

  • He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.

  • He has never taken a government-paid junket.

  • He has never voted to increase the powers of the executive branch.

  • He voted against the Patriot Act.

  • He voted against regulating the Internet.

  • He voted against the Iraq war.

Popular consensus shows Ron Paul WINS California Debate and tops 2nd place candidate, Mitt Romney, by over 13%. 40% to 27%!

Also WINS in the "LEAST of negatives" category, posting only 25% to Mitt Romney's 37%.

Most positives, least negatives! Now that's a WINNER!

Sandwich

Hat's off to the folks over at the coolest new site this month, Reality Sandwich.
I love these people!

QUOTE:

"Reality Sandwich is a web magazine for this time of intense transformation. Our subjects run the gamut from sustainability to shamanism, alternate realities to alternative energy, remixing media to re-imagining community, holistic healing techniques to the promise and perils of new technologies. We hope to spark debate and engagement by offering a forum for voices ranging from the ecologically pragmatic to the wildly visionary (which, to our delight, sometimes turn out to be the one and the same). Counteracting the doom-and-gloom of the daily news, Reality Sandwich is a platform for voices conveying a different vision of the transformations we face. Our goal is to inspire psychic evolution and a kind of earth alchemy."
